Persuasive Speech thoughts

As you are all refining your persuasive speeches, keep the following ideas in mind:

1. You need a works cited page

2. You need to make sure to have a "flip- side" or alternative perspective. Make sure to mention this idea, but do not dwell on it as it may confuse the audience of what your persuasive argument is. For instance, if I am doing a speech on working to prevent drinking and driving. I may mention what organizations are currently doing to prevent this or I may talk about statistics that may support a decline in the amount of arrests or accidents that are a result of this. I will mention these ideas BRIEFLY. This demonstrates knowledge of the big picture.

3. If you are wondering how to sound "more persuasive", a good technique is to compare and contrast!! You can find examples and explanation of this in the chapter on persuasive speaking in your book.

4. Make sure to have your proofs in parenthesis in your outline after the parts that apply. For instance, if your intro is a good example of an emotional appeal as it is a personal story connecting you to your topic, you should put: emotional appeal, proof, or pathos after your intro. Do this for logos and credibility as well. Also identify your alternative idea or "flipside" as well by putting "flipside" in parenthesis after that statement as well.

5. Lastly, make sure that you use proper names in your speech when quoting or paraphrasing others. For instance, if you interview your mother in the speech; introduce her as your mother giving her name, then use her name throughout.

You will need to turn in your proposal, outline with works cited page, and rubric. ( I will pass out the rubric in class the day of the speech)
