Group comments...
I asked each of you to comment on your groups. Here is my generalized feedback...
- I understand that some of you do not prefer to work in groups. I know that it is not always easy to work in groups. However, I feel that it is very important to this kind of course based on communication with others. I would hope that each of you can see working in groups as an opportunity to learn about negotiating and working with others to create a great outcome. In addition, this gives each of you the opportunity to see where your strengths and weaknesses are in groups and work on them.
- Each person is expected to contribute to the group for credit. If someone does not contribute fully, they will not receive full credit. Groups should work together and share the load. No one should feel liable for anyone else or feel that their fate lies with another group member. If you feel this way, we need to talk.
- I will find out who did what to contribute to unit one learning modules and discussions. In addition, I will track group progress and division of labor on all assignments.
- If group members are absent it is the responsibility of that individual to connect with their group and make up any work or contribution necessary in order to get credit. In addition, absences on days that we work in groups, give speeches, and take tests are unacceptable as a general rule. Only emergency situations will be accepted. This does preclude the first few weeks as I was not in class and do not have a record of attendance.
- Do not get bogged down with group members lack of contribution. As important as it is to work together, I expect individuals to stay on track despite absences and any lack of group participation. If groups feel that they are suffering due to absences and lack of effort, let me know so we can come up with a workable solution.
- In the future, I will try and make sure that groups have plenty of time to work in class. Group time is based on seeing that groups are working on the assignments at hand and not wasting time. If this is the case, then your group will have to find time outside of class to work on any assignments or projects.
- If you do not feel that you are doing your part in your group, talk with your group about what you can do to participate more fully.
- Finding someone to take charge is dependent on the group. Not all groups work the same way and I feel it is important that groups have the freedom to find their own patterns for success. This includes leadership preferences and division of the workload.
- It is extremely important and necessary that all group members show respect for the ideas and opinions of others. It is important that everyone feel they can express themselves without the threat of insult or being shut down.Multiple ideas mean more options and more in- depth discussions. Try to embrace differences of opinions and not take offense so easily!! I ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT TOLERATE DISRESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR TOWARDS ONE ANOTHER. THIS CLASS IS A SAFE ENVIRONMENT WHERE I WANT EVERYONE TO FEEL THAT THEY CAN SPEAK FRindiEELY!!! If this is a problem and you are unable to fix it, please let me know!!!
- Realize that you are not always going to get along with everyone. Realize that you are going to have differences that will make working in a group difficult. This is perfectly natural. Here are my three suggestions: A. approach this situation as an opportunity to find a way to work with someone you do not get along with. B. pull the individual you are having an issue with aside and try to express your feelings to see if you can come to some decision on how you can work together. C. Come and talk with me and we will see what we can do.
- Working in groups does require some out of class communication. There are three ways to do this: A. meet up physically B. exchange emails C. utilize the virtual chat room in elearning or a chatroom elsewhere on the web.
Basically what it comes down to when working in groups (at least in this class) is that you are all expected to do your share. You are all expected to give imput and be respectful of other opinions as well. I am more than happy to help make sure that this happens!!

Muddiest points cleared...
Here are some of your questions and concerned answered.
- If you have personal barriers, please know that I will do my best to accomodate you, just keep me let me know.
- Learning modules and discussions are valid learning tools. They encourage group participation and eases each of you into speaking out in front of others. In addition, it is a creative way to learn the material more collaboratively rather than lecture style which is not my forte. Lastly, discussions have three purposes, one is that they allow each group to discuss a topic and come to a concensus.Second is that the questions encourage critical thought of the content by incorporating your own ideas and experiences with the text. Third is that each student becomes familiar with elearning.
- Speeches will begin on time as stated in the course schedule; 2/ 18- 25. We will discuss the process in class.
- We will have a review day before the first test to clarify chapters 1-5. (Thursday, Feb. 4th)
- Responses to discussion forum should alternate between each group member so that everyone posts at least once.
- As we discussed in class, I do not expect you to answer the questions in the Learning Module forum. I expect groups to collaborate and come up with an answer for the questions in the discussion forum and then take turns posting the group response there for chapters 1-5.
- Learning modules should be used as guides for developing outlines of chapters and initiating class discussions as we talked about on Thursday.
- Getting used to class blogs and elearning can take some time. Don't worry everyone will catch on. If any of you continue to have issues, let me know and I can try to help.
- We are coming to the end of learning modules, however, I will try to allow an adequate amount of class time for groups to work in the future. they are in elearning. Ask me if you are unclear on how to get to elearning or navigating around there.
- It is perfectly normal to be nervous about speaking in public. I try to ease you into this process by presenting learning modules as a group. I will try to work on other ways to help everyone feel more comfortable. Just try to remember that you are not alone if you feel nervous and picking a topic that you are confident in and comfortable with is very important.
- Learning modules will be graded based on the outlines. Outlines should cover all the concepts listed in the learning modules and group participation. They are out of 25 points.
Discussions will be graded based on fully answering the questions and individuals posting at least once. These responses are out of 20 points.
- The blog is not currently interactive and should be used as a class information board.
- We will be in a circle except for speech and test days.
- Everyone should be reading the chapters. Learning modules or oulines should merely highlight main ideas of the chapters and the questions should be used to start the class discussion unless you or your group have your own questions.
- I have not decided what your written paper will be about yet. I will let you know as the time gets closer.
- This is an introduction to communication. Unit one will focus on intrapersonal communication and how we perceive ourselves and the way that others perceive us. Unit two will be primarily concerning interpersonal relationships and how we deal with our relationships. Unit three is all about group dynamics. In addition, this class also serves as a speech class as you will have three speeches; informative, persuasive, and group.
- Groups will not be so prominent in Unit two. We will work on some things in groups, but groups are mostly used in units one and three.
- If you feel lost, it sounds like you need to A. drop me an email with very specific questions. B. come to office hours on Tuesday. C. Stop me before or after class and make an appt. for a Thursday.
- If you have to miss class, please let me know ahead of time and then remind me closer to the date and make sure you make up any missed assignments. In addition, absences are only excused if I am notified via email prior to class, otherwise there is a loss of 3 points of participation.
so, there you go..
I will be happy to answer any other questions you may have as we go along.

Test One notes...
For test one, I will be posting a number of concepts that I want you to incorporate in your life and respond to.
For instance; I may say: "self- sabotage". I would then expect you to write a sentence or two describing how this is evident, appears, or occurs in your life. You may say that you self- sabotage when you are under pressure and then describe a time this has happened. You may say that you self sabotaged during a final because you were so overwhelmed by the content and did not think you were capable of learning it. And then I want you to write how you learn from this.
To be clear, you will describe how the concept occurs in your experience and how you learn from the concept. You will be graded on the thoroughness and specificity of your response.
(We will be talking about this in class!!)

Notes about the first speech...
Topic ideas are due by Thursday, Feb. 4th. That is a week from today.
You may choose any topic that you like for this speech. Please submit the following with you proposed idea.
Thesis statement: "What is the point or main idea?"
Why you chose this topic
How will this topic appeal to class
What are the three main ideas
What visual aids could you use
What are three intended sources
Note: Between the informative and persuasive speech, all students must conduct one survey, one interview, and use a library source. All students must have a minimum of three sources for each speech. So, you will have a minimum of 6 sources between these two speeches and three of them consist of a survey, interview, and library resource.
(We will talk about this on Tuesday, if you have questions before let me know...)
Go to any search engine and type in "informative speech ideas" if you are struggling to come up with a topic!!)

Tuesday class
There will be no class today. My husband is sick and cannot keep our son. I will return on Thursday, I have made alternate arrangements. Please know that I take attendence seriously, however, I am not ignorant to the fact that life happens and things come up. Just know that I have made a few changes to Unit one to accomodate for my absences. We will review any questions and the schedule on Thursday.
Please email me with any questions or concerns.

what's up
Hello Everyone.
I want to let you all know that it is not likely that I can make it to class today. My husband is ill and I do not feel comfortable leaving the baby with him. I am currently working to cover both com 114 classes, however, I have not heard back yet. I will let you all know what the deal is as soon as I hear back.
I did plan an overall review for today. I will do everything I can to be in class on Thursday.
I appreciate your attention.

HELLO AGAIN!!!!
HELLO ALL.
First, I wanted to let everyone know that I arrived home from the hospital today. Me and baby are healthy. I feel incredibly blessed to have such a wonderful family.
Second, I want to commend most of the groups for getting their responses posted in the discussion forum on elearning. If you have not done this, make sure you do before the next class (tuesday) for chapter one. If you have questions, email me. Just a reminder... go to elearning at the top of your "my ipfw" page and enter your info. Next, go to your com 114 class. Then go to the task bar and find "discussion". Find the appropriate chapter and "create a message" this is where you post your response. Also, make sure you include all the members of your assigned group. You will need to rotate who posts responses and make sure all posts are up by the start of the next class. You should check out the learning module on the task bar to get started!!
I think that everyone went over the syllabus on Tuesday and then the first group will go on Thursday. Discussion posts need to be up by next Tuesday for chapter one and next Thursday for chapter two and so on and so forth...
Third, I have every intention of being back on the 26th. However, feel free to email me with any questions you may have between now and then!! I will continue to check in.
