Group Project

This project is a combination of your last speech and your final exam. The project is worth a total of 175 points. 100 points for the test and 75 points for the speech. This is the breakdown:

Brief proposal due: April 6th
Speech: Proposal/Outline due: April 15th

This speech is based on each group choosing a media format and creating a presentation of the ways in which that media influences society. I am giving alot of freedom with this project. I do insist that you incorporate material from chapter 13 You must work with at least 7 of the following concepts.

Mass media (one to many messaging over technical channels)
social media (interactive media)
Prevalence of media in our lives (influence individual and cultural life)
*Uses and gratification theory (mass comm gratifies us- entertains, fulfills etc.)
*Agenda setting (tells us what to think about- "brings our attention": not what to think)
*Gatekeepers: reporters, editors, owners, Gov't, advertising- political: interested-invested parties)
*Cultivation Theory: assumption that certain forms of media reflect reality (television, film, music etc.) via mainstreaming (stabilizes public opinion)and resonance (the ways that media depictions align with personal experience: make sense therefore enhance the ease of believability)
*Ideological reinforcement: the ways that the media reinforces dominant ideas in society or ideas supported by elite parties with control

Social media

*: is interactive not merely produced and consumed
*: alters conceptions of space (internet)
*: invite supersaturation: unlimited access to information and people: "so many sites/links, so little time"
*: encourage multitasking (texting, emailing, downloading- multiple pages)
*:promote visual thinking: the progress of computer screens etc.

Media Literacy:
*understand influence
*access to media
*analyze media
*critically evaluate
*respond actively

100 points:

25- scholarly and reliable sources (5)- concept usage (7)
25- proposal/ outline (organization and preparation)
25- presentation (equal representation -participation, time, and physical factors)

25- brief one page summary about what you learned from chapter 13 in application to your assigned format.

2.Include the features of your group (cohesion:closeness, size, power structure: over or to) be specific.

3.Identify the kinds of group communication and use specific examples (task: issues, procedural:agenda oriented, and climate: constructive, egocentric: dysfunctional)

4.Describe the decision making methods (consensus: agreement on one decision, compromise: satisfy majority needs, voting:majority wins etc.)

5.Include cultural influences on decision making (individualism; each member is valuable and should be recognized for their contributions, equality: no clear division of class or position- prominent in Western society, assertiveness: high value on individualism, progress, change, and speed: etc.) Westerners operate with the quickness and efficiency. Risk and Uncertainty: need for progress and something new: innovative. Informality: relaxed atmosphere or conditions.

6.Identify limitations and strengths of the group (downfalls:conformity, time) (perks:presources, thoroughness, creativity)

Notes on the proposals...

Here are a few things to keep in mind while developing your persuasive speeches.

1. You need to have three proofs: emotional, logic, and credibility.
- Remember, an emotional appeal can be a personal story or issue to trigger interest or leave lasting thought depending on whether your argument is inductive or deductive. Logical reasoning is the statistics and support you find to back up your claim. Credibility can either be noted as inherent experience and/ or knowledge or perhaps derived through the process of your speech.

2.You need to at least acknowledge the flip side of your argument in order to be a responsible persuader. It is important to show the whole picture to show that you have been critical in your argument.

3. Make sure you have fulfilled your source requirements. If you are not sure, check with me.
You need three sources. Between this and the informative speech, you need at least one interview, one survey, and one library resource.

4. Make sure that you know how your interest was derived. This should tell you whether or not you will be persuasive. If you are genuine, it will fare better than if you are merely curious.

5. Make sure that your argument is organized, this lends to your credibility. If you appear wishy/ washy or scattered in thought, you will lose credibility and persuasiveness.

6. I am not fond of topics that involve illegal action or drugs. Having said that, I try to give the benefit of the doubt and if a student would like to proceed with such a subject, I would like to see how they will present the topic. I must admit though, I am far more critical of these speeches due to the content.

7. Also, do not forget that you need to have at least three main ideas to support your argument. And they should not be mere opinions but supported claims. Make sure to support your ideas and not rely on assumptions alone.

8. It is a good idea to look for sources and support consisting of the existing research on your topic. If you find a study or article that has already asked your question, use it for support.

Quick Note

Just wanted to send a friendly reminder that test 2 will be today in class. The format is just as I said it would be with Fill in the blanks, multiple choice, matching, T/F, and the short essay we discussed in class.

The test is over chapters 6-9, specifically what we discussed in class over these chapters. The test is worth a total of 150 points. Good Luck, see you all in class!

Mini apps

Hey, I wanted to make a note and let everyone know that I understand there may have been some confusion for those that were absent the week prior to spring break as far as what was expected from the mini- apps. I did explain the assignment in a post and said that I would explain further in class. I did answer any questions about the assignment in class. I am willing to answer any specific questions about the mini- apps. However, just a note that the ones presented in class today were right on the money. Come up with an idea or question concerning one or more concepts in a chapter and answer the question or respond to the idea using critical thinking and self reflection, perhaps. Follow the format instructions in the post and make sure to use proper in- text citations and have a works cited page.

\

oops...

Hello all. I forgot to give you your question to answer and post in the discussion forum for chapter 6. So, here it is..

I would like you to rank the nine non- verbal cues in the order of importance to you. Give a brief description as to why you ranked them the way you did afterward.

Monday, March 15, 2010

Just a note...

Make sure for your mini- apps that you are coming up with a question of your own and answering it based on the concepts in the chapter. Use the example in the post about mini apps as a guide.

Friday, March 12, 2010

Just a friendly reminder..

As stated in the revised course schedule, we will begin discussing chapter 6 and possibly 7 on Tuesday. If you were assigned these chapters for your mini- app, please have it finished and ready to present and turn in on Tuesday in class. I will not accept late papers or papers sent electronically.

Hope you all enjoyed the break!!

Written Assignment Questions

After many requests, I have decided to post the questions for the written assignment. Choose one of the following questions and write a 3- 5 page response based on the film; When a Man Loves A Woman.

1. Describe the ways in which each of the nine non- verbal communication cues are used in the film. (kinesics, haptics, physical appearance, artifacts, proxemics, environmental factors, chronemics, paralanguage, and silence) Make sure that your response is in essay form and these terms are in bold faced throughout. Be thorough in your description of the concepts and how they are used. If I cannot make a clear connection between the concepts and usage, theys will not be accepted.

2. There are several examples of relational climates in this film. Describe the ways in which each of the defensive/ supportive climate types are presented in the film. (evaluation vs. description, certainty vs. provisionalism, strategy versus spontaneity, control versus problem orientation, neutrality vs. empathy, superiority vs. equality) Be thorough in your description of the concepts and how they are used. If I cannot make a clear connection between the concepts and usage, they will not be accepted. Put your concepts in bold faced print!!

3. Describe how Alice and her husband's relationship manage conflict in terms of the four components in your book. In addition, discuss how they could use the 5 guidelines for healthy climates (using comm. to shape climates, accept/ confirm others, accept/ confirm yourself, self disclose when appropriate, and respect diversity in relationships) Be thorough in your description of the concepts and how they are or should be used. If I cannot make a clear connection between the concepts and usage, they will not be accepted. Put concepts in bold faced print!!

4. Describe the ways in which Alice and her husband endure the deterioration process. (intrapsychic, dyadic, social support, grave- dressing and resurrection. Then discuss how the couple will likely follow the evolution of a new romantic relationship to end up back together. (escalation- invitation, exploration, intensification, and revision) You will need to be hypothetical to describe the evolution of their renewed relationship. Be thorough in your description of the concepts and hwo they are and will be used. If I cannot make a clear connection between the concepts and usage, they will not be accepted. Put concepts in bold faced print!!
